History 1800s - 1900s

Our building is located at the center of the famous Erie Canal, which was started in 1817 and completed in 1825.  The above pictures were taken back in the day when C.L. Meech operated the factory making the finest Vintage Circa 1930s wheelbarrows and crates.  Previously, A.L. Freeman & Co. owned the factory producing 30,000 wheelbarrows a year used largely to construct and maintain the Erie Canal, being the largest producer in the U.S.

Running from Albany to Buffalo, it was the 2nd largest canal in the world.  The U.S. Congress recognized the canal as the most successful and influential human-built waterway and one of the most important works of civil engineering and construction in North America.  Canal boats were pulled by horses or mules down the towpath, and with Jordan being in the center of the 363-mile canal, it became one of the busiest villages of the time hosting parades and providing hotels, shops, and saloons for the weary travelers and workers passing through.
